US regulators reject Volkswagen Diesel fix plan

US regulators have rejected a plan by German automaker Volkswagen to recall diesel cars equipped with devices used to cheat on emissions tests.
The California Air Resources Board said the recall plan is unacceptable as it does not adequately identify the affected vehicles. It added that the company’s proposed fix falls far short of meeting the legal requirements. According to state officials, the rejection applies to 2-liter diesel engines, which the company wanted to fix with new software. Volkswagen has been engulfed in scandal since September after revelations that 11 million of its diesel cars worldwide were fitted with devices to cheat in pollution tests. The world’s number-two automaker faces regulatory and criminal investigations in several countries, including Germany and the United States, and potentially billions of dollars in fines.
