Throttle body cleaning. Does your car idle rough, does the engine seem like it is trying to die when you are at a stop light, is the engine taking a little longer to start than normal?
You might have a dirty throttle body and that is something you can repair yourself. In this video we are cleaning the throttle body on a 2005 Ford F150 pick up truck with a 4.6 V8 engine.
Using just a wire brush and some throttle body cleaner made by BG, or you can use any throttle body cleaner made for throttle body service which is available at your local auto parts store.

“Common Throttle Body Symptoms and Problems”
What are the most common complaints I see in my auto repair shop that are related to a dirty throttle body?
1. Rough idle speed. We like to call this hunt and peck, like a chicken does when it is looking for food. The engine is trying to keep a steady idle speed but the carbon build up in the throttle body plates are not allowing it. So the engine is hunting for a steady idle speed, which causes the roughness you feel inside the vehicle.
2. Slower starts or extended starting periods. You might have to crank the engine over much longer than you used to. The engine might start and die, and you have to crank it again. These are pretty common complaints when there is a dirty throttle body issue.

3. Dies at stops. The engine is having a hard time keeping the idle speed high enough without dying. This complaint is worse with the air conditioner on, since there is more load on the engine with the A/C compressor on. A dirty throttle body will cause the engine to decrease the idle speed as the vehicle comes to a complete stop, and will eventually die. Restarting can take some time as in the extended crank complaint above.
This is a common complaint and the throttle body as well as the idle speed control motor should be cleaned periodically as part of regular scheduled maintenance.
