In this video, engineer Jim Bostwick of the HaydonKerk division of AMETEK Precision Motion Control explains the basic motion and power-transmission functions of his company’s lead-screw driven actuator assemblies. Shot in Chicago at the last PackExpo, this video also shows some leadscrew closeups. As Bostwick explains, this lineup of HaydonKerk products from 1/8-in. diameters all the way to 15/16-in. diameters. Leads range from 0.012 of an inch to three inches per revolution.
Some of the lead-screw offerings also integrate guide rails. Called the screw rail, these assemblies include both the rotary-to-linear subcomponent (in the form of the screw) and the linear rails to essentially handle radial, axial, and moment loads. In fact, some versions also include support frames for the screw … so engineers can get the design in versions up to eight feet long … without any worries about screw whip or vibration.
In this video, Bostwick also explains how step motors and even drives can go onto HaydonKerk lead-screw designs. His company sells these predesigned and preassembled as fully integrated turnkey actuators.
