TRANSCRIPT:
Beaver Aerospace & Defense is a world-class provider of electromechanical actuators, or EMAs, like this innovative landing gear EMA which allows aircraft manufacturers to reduce weight and aircraft maintenance by completely eliminating hydraulic systems.
During normal gear extension or retraction, the EMA powers the landing gear to the down or up lock position. With this EMA, gear retraction is capable in 7 seconds or less, thus meeting the requirements of the applicable …..
During the last 5% of travel, the EMA speed is reduced to allow the landing gear to preload into the hard structure holding it into position. The EMA in conjunction with the jury struct serves as the down or up lock by way of an electromechanical brake, holding the landing gear in place without power consumption.
In the event of a power loss, a mechanical release mechanism allows a controlled landing gear emergency extension or freefall. Each EMA is mechanically coupled by a boatin cable that links to al ever in the cockpit. This allows the aircraft crew to fully deploy the landing gear to its down and locked landing position during a power outage.
The freefall energy is managed by way of a centrifugal clutch to ensure the gear does not damage the aircraft structure during this emergency condition.
This process also incorporates the use of a one-way no-back mechanism that prevents the gear from coming back up when the emergency extension has been executed.
The emergency extension is vital to a landing gear actuator designed for certification .with this mechanism, the landing gear cannot fall too fast and damage the aircraft, yet always has the __ energy to freefall to the down lock position.
Once the emergency release is engaged by the pilot, no other actions within the actuator are required. IN this mode, the landing gear cannot be moved except in the gear down direction as a result of the internal no-back mechanism.
In the event of an undesired emergency gear extension, the EMA can be reactivated to normal operation by reengaging the emergency release handle. No additional action or maintenance is required to reactive the EMA to normal operation.
