With the summer months now upon us and temperatures beginning to rise, it’s time to think air conditioning. Although most window AC units are built around the premise that the home has vertical sliding windows, many homeowners are installing casement style windows that open horizontally. These windows would need a casement window air conditioner in order to provide cooling to the room.

What is a casement window air conditioner?
A casement window air conditioner is simply a unit that is built with a vertical mindset. Instead of being wide, the unit is built tall and has vertical gap fillers rather than the traditional side pieces that extend to fill the opening left in sliding windows. Although the units are built and look differently, the function and operation are in no way different from any standard window AC unit. The unit is simply different in order to accommodate the type of window.

Is installation any different?
Since you have to think vertically, the answer to this is yes. You need to measure the space available but instead of measuring the space right to left, you measure the height in order to figure out how large of a casement window air conditioner you can get. Once you have the AC unit and filler kit that usually come together, you can begin installation. For most installations, you should only need a screwdriver, a cardboard cutter, and maybe a helper to hold a unit steady at times.

You first install the mounting brackets according to the instructions and then carefully place the AC unit into place and slide the widow over to create a tight fit. You then use the screws to attach the sides to the window and inside of the window frame. The top filler if available will attach to the top of the inside window frame. You can add additional filler by cutting a piece of plywood and placing it on the outside of the window covering the filler area. The only exception to routine installation would be for brick homes where a wood piece would need to be installed first for the mounting brackets to attach to.

Where can you find a casement window air conditioner?
You can find this type of AC unit at almost every major home improvement store and most major department stores. You simply need to know a few simple things such as the size you can cover with the unit, how many BTU’s of cooling power you need based on room size and they type of outlet the unit needs. Most window AC units operate on 120 volts but there are a few larger units which have a higher power rating and may even need their own breaker. Also make sure the unit you are buying is a casement window AC unit and if you have any questions, a qualified salesperson will be happy to assist you.
